Product Description

Product Description

In teeming Victorian London, where lavish wealth and appalling poverty exist side by side, one mysterious man navigates both worlds with perfect ease. Rich, handsome and ingenious, Edward Pierce preys on the most prominent of the well-to-do as he cunningly orchestrates the crime of his century. Who would suspect that a gentleman of breeding could mastermind the daring theft of a fortune in gold? Who would predict the consequences of making the extraordinary robbery aboard the pride of England's industrial era, the mighty steam locomotive? Based on fact, as lively as legend, and studded with all the suspense and style of a modern fiction master, here is a classic novel, set a decade before the age of dynamite - yet nonetheless explosive...

5.0 out of 5 stars Both a history lesson and a great thriller! Fantastic!, 15 Jul 2002
By Siobhan (Castlewellan, Northern Ireland) - See all my reviews
This is brilliant! Not only are you treated to a great thriller, and the clever plot of the crime itself, but almost submlinally you receive a lesson in the history of the time. Little fascinating facts are dotted throughout, and you can't help but bore your companions senseless with 'did you know.....?' at far too regular intervals. This book was passed around a group of us who were travelling together, and everyone was totally enchanted. Read and thoroughy enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like reading and learning, then you'll love this book, 7 May 2001
Having recently rubbished 'Timeline' I felt a little guilty, but I still had faith in Michael Crichton and so turned to an older book I handn't read. It was one of his best and weaved a great story out of an ingenious event. The research was good, though probably not too challenging as it was based on court records. Having done the research Crichton then litters the book with Victorian slang to make the experience more believeable. Fantastic!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The truth is stranger than fiction., 6 Dec 2000
By A Customer
I knew very little about the Great Train Robbery before reading this expertly written account, but now I feel as if I understand the event much more fully. Based, of course, on fact, the novel is nevertheless a gripping read. Crichton uses the testimonies of the participants in the robbery and elaborates upon them expertly, constructing a story in which you are completely immersed from start to finish.

The information he has gathered about society in Victorian England is extensive and believable, and it is this attention to detail which I feel distinguishes Crichton as an author. He regularly interrupts the action in order to explain certain events: why they occurred in the way they did. For example he devotes a section to inform us that in the 1850s, when the robbery was committed, safes were the most reliable means of preventing theft. With no dynamite or plastic explosive available, a replica key was the only way to access a heavy safe. Thus the emphasis in the planning of the robbery on obtaining keys is justified.

There are some tedious parts in the book, but they are few and far between. I had little interest in the dog fighting information but this proved to be crucial to Edward Pierce's plan to obtain one of the keys, so of course it had to be included. This is one of the problems in true stories: the author has less control over the content. I found the detail on the structure of Victorian society regarding the roles of the sexes very interesting, however. Both men and women had a hard time, it would seem.

My summary is simply that, having read Timeline by the same author, I recommend Crichton as a writer of choice and the Great Train Robbery as a very accomplished example of his work.
